A landscape with stories. People with their own voices.
The north is a place where people live, work and create. Make time for the cultures that give the landscape its meaning.
Begin by listening
Sámi culture is living culture.
Do not reduce a people to a costume, a photograph or a single story. Learn from Sámi hosts, artists and cultural organisations, and let them introduce their own experiences.
Abisko has a human history.
Sámi people have lived in the Abisko area for thousands of years. Reindeer husbandry continues here through Gabna Sámi reindeer-herding district. Hearths, hut sites and trapping pits are traces of lives lived in this landscape.
Nutti Sámi Siida is a Sámi tourism business offering cultural and nature experiences. Explore its Márkanbáiki museum and current hosted activities through the business’s own website.
An independent visitor suggestion. Book directly with the host; no partnership is implied.
Small choices. A more thoughtful visit.
Be a guest worth welcoming.
Ask before photographing.
Ask permission before photographing people, ceremonies or private activities. Follow your host’s guidance about what can be shared.
Give working herds room.
Do not approach, feed or follow free-ranging reindeer. During a hosted encounter, follow staff instructions. A herd is part of someone’s work and livelihood.
Buy with curiosity.
Ask who made a craft item and what its materials and design mean. Buying directly from a maker lets them tell their own story.
Leave old hearths, stones and other cultural traces undisturbed. We do not present aurora folklore as a single belief shared by all Sámi people.
Everyday Sweden
Make room for the ordinary pleasures.
Pause for fika.
A coffee or tea break, often with something to eat, is an easy way to slow down and enjoy company. Find a café, warm your hands and give the day a little breathing space.
Be ready, on time.
For a shared tour, being dressed and ready at your confirmed pickup time makes the evening better for everyone. Build extra time around winter layers and unfamiliar meeting points.
Taste the region.
Regional menus may include Arctic char, reindeer and cloudberries. Ask about the food’s origins and tell the restaurant about allergies or dietary preferences when reserving.
Choose a cultural visit with its own hosts by day, then join our team for a guided aurora evening. Check timings and transfers before combining bookings.
